The Dark Tower: Idris Elba To Play Roland?

Dark TowerStephen King‘s The Dark Tower is one of the best series I’ve ever read. Originally seven books, King later added an eighth that takes place between the fourth an fifth, but  if you  don’t read it, then it’s not the end of the  world.

I read some pretty great news yesterday, from Deadline regarding some potential casting choices. Idris Elba is currently the front runner to play the gunslinger, Roland Of Gilead. To say I’m excited by this news would be entirely accurate.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, or at least no announcements made, but Idris Elba is a fantastic actor, and one that I have faith would bring the gunslinger’s savage nobility to the screen, but the potential casting is still Idris Elbaa rumour at this point.

A strong rumour, granted.

I first read the first part of the Dark Tower series The Gunslinger just over seventeen years ago, and then proceeded to devour the other three books that had been released at the time before waiting for King to finish the series. In a happy coincidence I’m currently in the middle of a re-read of the entire series (something I once said I’d never do), so the news that an actor of this caliber is attached to play a character that I’m getting to know all over again is pretty damn exciting.

If you’ve never read the books, and you want to before the movie hits you’ve still got time; the first installment in the Sony Pictures production, focusing on The Gunslinger is due out some time in 2017 (if I was a betting man, I’d say the title would be the same). There’s also a beautifully drawn comic book adaptation to the series from Marvel Comics that delves into Roland’s back story, too, if you want to check that out.
